If you have iCloud Photo Library activated, every photo you take with your iPhone or iPad, and every image you upload to Photos on your Mac from a camera, will appear on all your devices. If iCloud Photo Library is enabled on the Phone (there are many iCloud services - iCloud Photos library is only one of those) then you do not manually connect teh phone adn import - you enable ICPL on your Mac and sync all photos - ICPL will keep all devices libraries identical - all additions, deletions or edits made on any connected device will be made on all devices. I always have photos at least up to 6 months old on my iPhone/iCloud all the time. I never have to empty it. Imported photos don't overlap, or in other words, there are no duplicates on my Mac. I can still take full advantage of iCloud Photos Library and the 'Optimize iPhone Storage' feature. I don't need to use Photo. I have around 35,000 photos on my original iCloud account and found a neat way to transfer them all, as is, to a new iCloud account. First, you will need to be logged into your Mac with your original iCloud account. In the Photos.app, you should have your full library downloaded to this Mac (not optimised Mac storage option).

Part 1: How to Fix Cannot Import Photos from iPhone to Mac

- Disconnect your iPhone and plug it back to try again.
